1. Stay safe and stay off the roof
Do not climb onto a storm damaged roof. Wet shingles, loose debris and hidden weak spots make it dangerous. Stay clear of downed power lines and call the utility if any are near the house. Everything you need to check can be done from the ground and from inside.
2. Check inside for water
Look at ceilings and walls on the top floor for new stains or drips, and check the attic if you can get into it safely. Move belongings away from leaks, put down buckets and towels, and keep an eye on it through the next rain.
3. Document everything
- Take photos and video of damage from the ground: missing shingles, lifted flashing, dented gutters, cracked or missing siding
- Photograph any water damage inside
- Note the date and time of the storm
- Keep receipts for anything you spend to protect the house
- Do not throw away damaged materials until they have been documented
4. Stop more water from getting in
If water is coming in, the roof needs to be protected quickly, usually with an emergency tarp, so the damage does not spread. Most homeowner's policies expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, so do not wait on this part.
5. Get a professional inspection with photos
Wind and hail damage is not always visible from the ground. A roofer can find lifted shingles, cracked seals, bruised shingles and damaged flashing that you would never see from the yard. We inspect for free and document the damage with photos, which gives you a clear record if you decide to file a claim.
6. Talk to your insurance company
Every policy is different, so read yours or call your agent about what is covered and your deductible. Having your own photos and an inspection report in hand before the adjuster visits makes that conversation much more straightforward.
Watch out for storm chasers
After big storms, out of town crews go door to door. Be cautious with anyone who asks for a large payment upfront or pressures you to sign that day. Work with a local contractor you can call back next year. We have served the Hudson Valley for more than 10 years and we are based right here in New Windsor.
